Obedience training for dogs can be a daunting task. Most dog owners can potty-train or teach their dog ‘sit’ or ‘stay’ easily, but beyond that, they run into difficulty. Dogs are a lot more intelligent than most people give them credit for – I’ve often found myself on the less-intelligent end of the leash with the dog training me.
Certainly, to achieve results, a person can hire an obedience trainer - which can consist of sending your dog away for periods and has the potential to be rather expensive. Not that this is a bad thing, as this can produce excellent outcomes; we take our hats off to local dog trainers and thank them for their work. One key piece of information we have taken away from our research is that dog owners need just as much training as the dog itself to achieve long-term results.
It can be tough to find a place to start, especially when you have so many dog-training questions running through your head as well as the rest of your life to balance – we can relate. There are thousands of unorganized videos online, books, and articles that cover an array of how-to training topics: ‘How to make your dog sit;’ ‘How to make our dog not chew on things;’ ‘How to make your dog stand on their head.’ The list goes on. The point is, even with access to unlimited information, information is not knowledge. The hardest part of our training journey was not finding information but finding the information in an organized and well-laid-out, easy-to-follow plan. What we needed was a curriculum, with a starting point and a roadmap with support. Like school.
